Mythic+ Affix Guide — WoW Midnight Season 1

Affixes are the mechanical modifiers that make Mythic+ a weekly puzzle rather than a static difficulty. The right preparation before a key pull — knowing what's active, what to expect, and how to play around it — is often worth more than a single item level of gear. This guide covers everything active in Midnight Season 1.

Weekly rotation

The Tyrannical/Fortified affix rotates every Tuesday reset. Check Raider.IO or Wowhead to see which is active this week. This guide covers the strategies for both.

The Basics

What Are Mythic+ Affixes?

Affixes are gameplay modifiers applied to Mythic+ keys above a certain level. They change how enemies behave, add mechanical requirements, or increase difficulty in specific ways. Unlike the base Mythic+ difficulty scaling (which just raises enemy health and damage), affixes introduce new mechanics that require deliberate strategy.

In Midnight Season 1, there are two layers of affixes: the weekly rotating affix (Fortified or Tyrannical) that changes every Tuesday, and seasonal affixes that are fixed for the entire season and activate at progressively higher key levels.

Key point:Affixes don't just make the dungeon harder — they change which parts of the dungeon are hardest. A pull that's trivial on Tyrannical can wipe a group on Fortified, and vice versa. The best M+ players adapt their pull patterns and cooldown usage to the active affix, not just the dungeon layout.
By Key Level

When Affixes Activate

Affixes don't all activate at once. Here's the full breakdown by key level bracket.

+2 – +4No affixes

Base difficulty only. This is the best range to learn dungeon layouts, routing, and your group's cooldown rhythm without the mechanical complexity of affixes. No penalty for bad pulls.

+5 – +8Tyrannical or Fortified
Tyrannical OR Fortified

The main weekly rotating affix activates. Either boss health and damage are scaled up (Tyrannical) or trash health and damage are scaled up (Fortified). One of these is always active, alternating week to week.

+9 – +12Tyrannical/Fortified + Seasonal Affix 1
Tyrannical OR Fortified+ Seasonal Affix

A seasonal affix activates alongside the weekly rotation. The seasonal affix is fixed for the entire season — it doesn't change week to week, only the Tyrannical/Fortified rotation changes. This is where M+ starts requiring meaningful preparation.

+13 – +16All active + Seasonal Affix 2
Tyrannical OR Fortified+ Seasonal Affix 1+ Seasonal Affix 2

Three affixes simultaneously. Group composition and coordinated cooldown usage are required. Mistakes at this level — missed interrupts, poor positioning, failed mechanics — cascade quickly. Pre-pull planning is expected.

+17+Full affix stack — extreme
Tyrannical OR Fortified+ Seasonal Affix 1+ Seasonal Affix 2

All affixes active at maximum intensity. One mistake in a boss fight or dangerous trash pull can end the run. Players at this level treat dungeon knowledge like a raid — every mob ability and cast is tracked. This is where leaderboard scores are earned.

The Weekly Rotation

Fortified vs Tyrannical — The Core Rotation

These two affixes alternate every Tuesday reset and fundamentally change the identity of the week. Experienced M+ players plan their key pushes around which affix is active for which dungeon.

Fortified

Trash is the threat

Non-boss enemies have 20% more health and deal 30% increased damage.

During Fortified weeks, trash packs that would be trivially cleared in a Tyrannical week can now down DPS players who stand in the wrong spot. Multi-pull routes that work on Tyrannical may need to be broken into smaller pulls.

Tactics

  • ·Reduce pull sizes — don't chain-pull the same number of mobs as Tyrannical weeks
  • ·Use AoE crowd control (stuns, slows, roots) to manage high-health trash packs
  • ·Bosses become much easier — DPS cooldowns are wasted on bosses; save them for dangerous trash
  • ·Prioritise high-damage trash mobs with interrupts — they hurt significantly more

Tyrannical

Bosses are the threat

Boss enemies have 30% more health and deal 15% increased damage.

During Tyrannical weeks, boss fights last significantly longer and deal more damage. Healers run oom more often, tanks need external cooldowns at specific points, and DPS need to burst efficiently because boss enrage timers are tight at higher key levels.

Tactics

  • ·Use major DPS cooldowns on pull — every global counts against a beefed-up boss
  • ·Communicate healer-cooldown usage before the fight starts, not during
  • ·External cooldowns (Blessing of Protection, Darkness, Rallying Cry) are planned abilities, not reaction saves
  • ·Trash is easier — pull larger and move faster between bosses to protect your timer

Seasonal Affixes in Midnight Season 1

Seasonal affixes are fixed for the entire season — they're present on every key above their activation threshold, regardless of which week it is. Midnight Season 1 introduces two seasonal affixes that activate at +9 and +13 respectively.

Check Wowhead for the specific Season 1 affix names and effects. Seasonal affix names and interactions are updated on Wowhead within hours of each patch going live, and their dedicated affix pages include interactive explainers with ability timers and optimal responses.

Regardless of the specific mechanic names, seasonal affixes in WoW Midnight Season 1 follow established affix archetypes. Here's how to approach each archetype:

Strategy Archetypes

General Strategies for Each Affix Type

Most affixes in WoW's history belong to one of four categories. Knowing how to play around each category means you can adapt to new affixes quickly, even on the first week they go live.

Enrage / Damage Escalation Affixes

Affixes that increase enemy damage over time, or trigger an enrage when specific conditions are met (percentage thresholds, casts going through, etc.). These punish slow kills and reward fast, burst-heavy DPS.

  • Prioritise interrupt targets that trigger enrage casts
  • Don't let enemies sit at low health — finish them quickly to prevent ramp
  • Coordinate DPS cooldowns to spike priority targets in the enrage window

Environmental Hazard Affixes

Affixes that spawn ground effects, swirlies, or environmental hazards that players must avoid while fighting. These tax spatial awareness and often punish melee-heavy groups more than ranged.

  • Pre-position the group before pulls so players have room to dodge
  • Tanks should avoid baiting casts into already-congested areas
  • Assign a 'clear' direction before the pull so everyone knows where to dodge to

Corruption / Curse Affixes

Affixes that apply debuffs to players that need to be dispelled, cleansed, or played around. They add healer work, increase coordination requirements, and can cascade quickly if ignored.

  • Assign dispel priority — healer handles one type, off-dispellers (Paladins, Shaman, etc.) handle another
  • Debuffed players should announce it in chat or call it out — don't assume the healer saw it
  • Some corruptions cleanse naturally after a timer — know which ones to wait out vs. dispel immediately

Spawn / Add Affixes

Affixes that spawn additional enemies during pulls or boss fights. These add target count, interrupt demand, and positioning complexity. Groups with strong AoE control have an inherent advantage.

  • Plan CC on spawned adds immediately — don't let them free-cast
  • Identify which spawned enemies have interruptible abilities and assign interrupts in advance
  • Tanks should kite adds into the main pack where AoE can cleave them down
Every Week

How to Check the Current Week's Affixes

The current week's active affix combination is always visible in three places:

  1. 1

    In-game keystone item

Hover over any keystone in your bag. The active affixes are listed directly on the item tooltip alongside the key level and dungeon name.

  2. 2

    Raider.IO front page

Raider.IO displays the current week's affix prominently at the top of their Mythic+ section, alongside a dungeon tier list adjusted for that affix combination.

  3. 3

    Wowhead's Mythic+ hub

Wowhead shows the active affix in their M+ portal and includes interactive affix guides with videos and ability timers specific to each season's affixes.

When to Boost

When Affixes Make a Boost Worth It

Certain affix weeks — particularly when a difficult seasonal affix coincides with a tough dungeon on Tyrannical — create hard walls for players who are close to but haven't crossed a key level threshold. If you need a specific key level completed for your vault and the current week is unfavorable, a boosted run with a team that knows the exact strategies is often the most time-efficient solution.

Boostifier's M+ carries are always handled by teams actively pushing high keys in the current week — they know the affix combination and have optimised their strategies for it.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do affixes change every week?

The Tyrannical/Fortified rotation changes every week — you're always on one or the other. The seasonal affixes (the ones that activate at higher key levels) are fixed for the entire season and do not rotate. Only the Tyrannical/Fortified component changes week to week.

Where can I see which affix is active this week?

Wowhead and Raider.IO both display the current week's affix at the top of their Mythic+ pages. In-game, you can see the active affix on the keystone item itself or in the Dungeon Finder UI.

Is Tyrannical or Fortified harder?

It depends heavily on the dungeon. Dungeons with one difficult boss (like a raid-like final boss encounter) are significantly harder on Tyrannical weeks. Dungeons with dense, high-damage trash packs are harder on Fortified. Most players find Tyrannical more punishing at high key levels because boss fight length taxes healer mana and tank survival more than trash.

At what key level should I worry about affixes?

You'll encounter the first affix (Fortified or Tyrannical) at +5. At this level, the impact is manageable — just adjust your pull style and cooldown usage. The real complexity spike comes at +9 when the first seasonal affix activates alongside the weekly rotation.

Can I target specific affix weeks for pushing keys?

Yes. Experienced players time their push weeks around favorable affix combinations. If a dungeon has a brutal boss but easy trash, you push it on Fortified weeks (when bosses are easier). If it has dangerous trash packs but an easy final boss, Tyrannical week is better for that dungeon. Planning around this is a meaningful skill at higher levels.

Why do some groups only run on specific affix weeks?

At high key levels (+15 and above), affix combinations can make the difference between a timed run and a depleted key. Serious pushing groups plan their schedule around which dungeons are favorable for the current week's affix — this is known as "fishing" for the right affix week.
